Trial Bay Estate

Trial Bay Estate is a boutique vineyard located on the east-facing shores of the D’Entrecasteaux Channel in Southern Tasmania, approximately 30 minutes from Hobart. It operates in one of Australia’s most exciting Pinot Noir regions, focusing exclusively on producing premium single vineyard Pinot Noir. The vineyard spans about 2 acres and follows organic viticulture practices, including hand-pruning vines and handpicking fruit, to promote healthy living soil and premium fruit production. The winemaking approach emphasizes minimal intervention to allow the pure expression of the unique terroir. The estate was originally planted in 1997, with an additional block added in 2007. Since 2019, Nick and Saskia, who relocated from Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula, have owned and managed the estate. Nick, with a background in horticulture, oversees most vineyard operations. Their goal is to produce high-quality Pinot Noir that reflects the distinct terroir and can be enjoyed by all. The 2022 vintage, characterized by a cool and wet growing season, produced a low-yield harvest of elegant Pinot Noir with fine tannins, cherry fruit flavors, subtle spice, and a creamy, succulent palate. The wine is described as powerful yet elegant, with a complex palate of red fruits, earthy nuances, and a long, lingering finish. Trial Bay Estate offers limited production wines, with only 660 bottles of the 2022 vintage made, and encourages enjoying their wines now or cellaring them to develop further until 2032.
