Thompson Estate

Thompson Estate is a premium winery located in the Wilyabrup sub-region of the Margaret River wine region in Western Australia. Since its establishment in the mid-1990s, the winery has focused on producing limited quantities of exceptional wines, emphasizing sustainable viticulture and innovative winemaking techniques. The vineyard spans 20 hectares and includes plantings of chardonnay, pinot, and cabernet, with recent additions of Burgundian clones of chardonnay. The winery’s philosophy is inspired by a medical specialty model, reflecting the background of co-founder Peter Thompson, a cardiologist, who initially engaged specialist winemakers to craft individual wines. This approach evolved into building a state-of-the-art winery on the property, with the first vintage produced there in 2009.

The Wilyabrup location offers unique climatic advantages, including an ideal number of sun exposure days and cooling maritime breezes from the surrounding sea on three sides, which contribute to the intensity and balance of the wines. Thompson Estate is renowned for producing some of Australia’s “icon status” chardonnays and cabernets, recognized by prestigious wine critics such as James Halliday, who awarded the winery Five Red Stars, placing it among Australia’s elite producers.

The winery is committed to environmental stewardship, practicing organic viticulture and selective biodynamic methods, while preparing for updated certification with Sustainable Winegrowing Australia. Visitors are welcomed at the cellar door in a relaxed barrel room setting, offering tastings and private experiences. The estate’s wines include the Specialist range, Estate range, Four Chambers range, and Locum wines, all crafted with obsessive attention to detail to achieve elegance, balance, and expression of the unique terroir.
