Moss Wood

Moss Wood is a pioneering and highly respected estate in the Margaret River wine region of Western Australia, established in 1969. It is the second oldest estate in the region and has played a foundational role in shaping the area's reputation for premium wines. The winery initially focused on Cabernet Sauvignon, planting its first vines in 1969 and producing its first vintage with 250 cases. Over time, Moss Wood expanded its varietals to include Semillon, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Merlot, and Sauvignon Blanc, with a particular emphasis on quality and terroir expression.

The winery is located in the Wilyabrup sub-region, known for its gravelly loam over clay soils and unique topography, which contribute to the distinctiveness of Moss Wood’s wines. The region benefits from a maritime climate influenced by the nearby Indian Ocean, providing ideal conditions for viticulture. Moss Wood’s approach is deeply rooted in vineyard management, with continual reassessment of viticultural practices such as soil conservation, pruning, and trellising to enhance grape quality.

Moss Wood’s Cabernet Sauvignon has received exceptional acclaim, including a prestigious "exceptional" ranking in Langton's Classification of Australian Wine and multiple 99/100 scores from noted wine critics like Ray Jordan and James Halliday. The winery’s commitment to excellence is reflected in awards such as the Best Chardonnay Award in the James Halliday Wine Companion 2020 and the "Best of the Best" Varietal Cabernet Sauvignon Award in 2021. Clare and Keith Mugford, the owners, have been recognized for their significant contributions to the Western Australian wine industry, receiving the Jack Mann Memorial Medal.

Inspired by Bordeaux’s great wines but adapted to the unique Margaret River terroir, Moss Wood continues to produce wines that are elegant, refined, and expressive of their origin. The estate also manages the Ribbon Vale vineyard, further enhancing its portfolio with outstanding vintages. Moss Wood remains dedicated to producing specialist, high-quality wines that reflect the best of Margaret River’s potential.
