Overview
Leeuwenkuil Family Vineyards is a historic and family-driven winery located in the Swartland region of South Africa, with roots dating back to 1693. The estate, originally known as Schinderkuijl, was renamed Leeuwenkuil in 1800 and has been owned by the Dreyer family since 1851. The name "Leeuwenkuil," meaning "Lion’s Lair," pays homage to the Cape Lions that once roamed the area. The farm is notable for its historic buildings, including a manor house built with stone and ship’s bow lintels, and a courtyard layout preserved since 1704. Over the past three decades, Willie and Emma Dreyer have expanded the vineyard from 45 hectares to 1250 hectares, making it the largest vineyard owner in the Cape Coastal area. The winery combines a deep respect for tradition with modern winemaking techniques, highlighted by the construction of a new state-of-the-art winery facility starting in 2019, designed to maintain and enhance wine quality with a future capacity of 30 million litres. Leeuwenkuil is known for crafting award-winning wines that reflect the unique terroir of the Swartland, driven by a strong family bond and passion for quality. The winemaking team, led by head winemaker Pieter Carstens, brings extensive experience and a commitment to excellence, helping the winery achieve international recognition.
