Hallcrest Vineyards

Hallcrest Vineyards is a historic and prominent winery located in the Santa Cruz Mountains, in the quaint town of Felton, California. The winery was originally named by the Hall family in the 1880s and became a retreat for the family until 1941, when Chaffee Hall, a San Francisco attorney with a passion for wine, planted the first vineyard. At that time, Hallcrest was one of only three wineries in the Santa Cruz Mountains and the only one producing varietal wines from estate vineyards. Under Chaffee Hall’s leadership, Hallcrest quickly gained recognition for producing world-class wines, particularly Cabernet Sauvignon and White Riesling, earning a reputation as a benchmark winery and a "cult wine" producer in California.

In 1987, John Schumacher and his family purchased the winery, restoring the Hallcrest name and continuing the tradition of crafting uncompromising quality wines that reflect the Santa Cruz Mountain appellation. Hallcrest Vineyards remains family owned and operated, focusing on small-lot, handcrafted premium wines including Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, and Syrah.

Hallcrest is also notable for being the first certified organic winery in the United States, pioneering organic grape growing and wine processing methods. Their brand, “The Organic Wine Works,” was the first California Certified Organic Farmers vineyard on the Central Coast and the first organic processor recognized by the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms. They produce certified organic wines without added sulfites, challenging industry norms and earning national recognition and awards. The winery offers a welcoming tasting room and picnic-friendly deck, inviting visitors to enjoy their wines in a relaxed setting amidst the scenic Santa Cruz Mountains.
