Overview
144 Islands is dedicated to producing unique, singular wines that showcase the beauty of the Bay of Islands. The winery's ambition is to create wines that encapsulate the tastes and aromas of their site, preserving them for many years. The vineyard, established in 2015, spans 3.2 hectares on volcanic soils 290 meters above sea level near Kerikeri. This elevation helps mitigate coastal humidity, providing a favorable climate for grape growing. The winery produces approximately 15,000 bottles annually, with plans to expand production to 40,000 bottles. Grape varieties include Marsanne, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Albarino, and Petit Manseng. The Marsanne grape, historically linked to James Busby, a British Resident and wine enthusiast who planted grapes in Waitangi in 1833, has been particularly successful.
