About Durif

Durif, also known as Petite Sirah, is a red wine grape variety that originated in France. It was developed in the 1860s by French botanist Dr. François Durif, who discovered this grape as a cross between Syrah and Peloursin. Despite its origins in France, Durif gained major traction in California, where it is more commonly recognised as Petite Sirah. Over the years, the grape has carved a niche in New World wine regions, particularly the United States and Australia.

The flavour profile of Durif is robust and intense, marked by dark fruit flavours such as blackberry, blueberry, and plum. You'll often find notes of black pepper, chocolate, and liquorice, with a distinctive earthy undertone. On the palate, Durif delivers a bold, full-bodied experience with high tannins and moderate to high acidity, contributing to its excellent aging potential.

In terms of appearance, Durif wines typically exhibit a deep, inky purple colour, almost opaque in the glass. The tannins are firm and grippy, offering structure and complexity, while the acidity balances the richness, making it a dynamic and satisfying wine.

When it comes to food pairings, Durif is best matched with hearty, flavourful dishes. Consider pairing it with grilled meats, such as beef or lamb, barbecue ribs, or even a rich, mushroom-based stew. Its bold profile also complements aged cheeses and dishes with a smoky or peppery component.

Notable regions for Durif cultivation include California, particularly in areas like Napa Valley and Paso Robles, as well as parts of Australia, including the Rutherglen and Riverina regions. These areas provide the warm climates that Durif thrives in, allowing the grapes to develop their full flavour potential. The grape prefers well-drained soils, often flourishing in loamy or sandy terrains that offer excellent drainage and heat retention.
