Cariñena

Cariñena, also known as Carignan, is a red wine grape varietal with a rich history and distinct profile. Its origins trace back to the region of Aragon in northeastern Spain, where it is named after the town of Cariñena. This grape has been grown for centuries and has spread to various wine regions around the world, particularly in France, where it is commonly known as Carignan, and in Italy, where it is called Carignano.

Cariñena wines often exhibit a robust flavour profile characterised by red and black fruit notes, such as raspberry, cranberry, and blackberry. These are complemented by spicy undertones of pepper and liquorice, as well as earthy elements like leather and tobacco. On the palate, Cariñena is known for its pronounced acidity, which provides freshness and structure, alongside firm tannins that contribute to its aging potential.

Cariñena wines are typically deep ruby in colour, signalling their intensity and concentration. They are medium to full-bodied with high tannins and acidity levels. These characteristics make Cariñena an excellent candidate for blending, particularly with Grenache and Syrah, to add structure and complexity.

The bold nature of Cariñena pairs well with hearty dishes. Consider pairing it with grilled meats, such as lamb or beef, or savoury stews and casseroles. Its acidity also complements tomato-based dishes and rich, meaty pastas.

Besides its native Spain, where it thrives in regions like Priorat and Calatayud, Cariñena is widely cultivated in southern France, particularly in the Languedoc-Roussillon area. It is also found in Sardinia, Italy, where it is known as Carignano del Sulcis, and in parts of the United States and South America.

Cariñena thrives in warm, dry climates with plenty of sunshine, which helps to ripen its thick-skinned grapes. It prefers poor, well-drained soils, such as limestone and clay, which force the vines to root deeply and stress, enhancing the complexity and concentration of the wine.
